Laser Rifle

Description

The DEI-5 (Directed Energy, Infantry) is a low cost laser rifle used as a standard service rifle. It is powered by a single high density power cell and is air cooled. It fires pulsed laser beams that last for a a thousandth of a second. It has four settings, single shot low power (firing a 6kj pulse with every pull of the trigger), burst (firing 3 low power shots out with each pull of the trigger at an effective rate of 600rpm), Automatic (firing low power automatic pulses at a rate of 600 pulses per minute) and high power (firing 30kj pulses semi automatically). These pulses have a range of about five kilometers (though ergonomic issues limits the weapon's effective range to about 500 to 2 kilometers). A standard power cell stores enough energy for about 80 low power pulses or 16 high power pulses, while backpack power cells exist for prolonged engagements. For sniping it has a scope.

I hate the term laser rifle. A rifle by definition is a firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder with a helical pattern of grooves into  the walls of the barrel. Infact the term rifle originally referred to the grooves. The raised areas of the rifling are called "lands," which make contact with the projectile imparting spin around an axis as the projectile moves down the barrel of the gu . When the projectile leaves the barrel, this spin lends gyroscopic stability to the projectile and prevents tumbling improving accuracy. An energy weapon like a laser does not fire a solid projectile therefore it would not need rifling in the barrel therefore using the term rifle for it is incorrect. Instead you should call it a laser projector or Lasgun as these are far more correct.
